Car air conditioner smoking?

I was driving with my air conditioner on its lowest setting when I realized the air didn't feel cool. Once I turned it up a notch smoke started blowing out from the air vents that smelled maybe like burning rubber. I immediately turned off the air and fan and the smoke stopped. What could be wrong? More importantly is my car safe to drive until I get it fixed (if I don't turn on the air)?
